About Us

Homestead Center for the Arts, founded in 1976, serves as the primary advocate for arts and culture in our surrounding communities. Although a virtual organization rather than a brick and mortar facility, HCA seeks out and nurtures organizations and individuals in the performing arts, visual arts, and those dedicated to our history and unique environments. Our volunteers administer an annual grant from Miami-Dade Cultural Affairs to help support members such as Art for Good, The Children's Art Gallery and Center, the East Everglades Orchid Society, Historic Homestead Town Hall Museum, and What If Works Theater and Film. The grants are not large, yet help with programs and outreach to demonstrate the depth of our varied artistic talent and cultural offerings. Our efforts also provide residents with information about joining groups such as the Lamplighters Writers, the South Dade Community Choir, the South Florida National Parks Camera Club, the South Florida Woodturners Guild, and others.

Two of the most popular, free series HCA runs are the Bea Peskoe Lunchtime Lectures and the Music Series (MuSe).

Lunchtime Lecture

Lunchtime Lectures was named in honor of Bea Peskoe, one of HCA’s founders. There are 4 to 8 lectures each year open to the public at no cost. There is an optional low-cost luncheon and the lecture is approximately one hour. The season runs October to May, the first Monday of the month. Topics cover arts, culture, and history. “The Making of Tamiami Trail”, “What Makes an Art Masterpiece”, “Enactment of Marjorie Stoneman Douglas”, “Capturing Your Family Memoirs”, “Wonderful and Weird Underwater Inhabitants of Biscayne National Park”, and “Roadway to Freedom: Florida’s Underground Railroad” are only a few of the presentations over the years. Lectures are interactive and some have been so lively, attendees have lingered well past the end time to continue dialogue with the speaker.

MuSe

HCA’s MuSe is entering the fourth season. Popular from the outset, these events highlight different music genres in a dining setting. The event is free and dining is optional. At some point, dancing almost always becomes a part of the evening. The focus on performers is to engage local talent and events have featured Americana, Bluegrass, Cabaret, Jazz, and Rhythm and Blue. This program is of special benefit to older attendees who no longer drive distances to other venues.

Our Future

As HCA continues to expand our outreach to promote the diversity of artistic and cultural opportunities, the most common response is, “I didn’t know that was available here.” Our redesigned website provides information and access to dozens of monthly and seasonal activities. We are in the final stages of completing our Artists, Performing Artists, and Writers Galleries. These galleries provide a platform for HCA members who may not have yet established a separate business, but who do have art, books, or performances to display and promote. Homestead Center for the Arts has become “the place” for residents and visitors alike to learn about performing arts and cultural activities.
